fighting squirrels win rolla slugfestThe Charleston Fighting Squirrels fought out of the loser’s bracket to win the Rolla Slugfest last weekend. The Squirrels defeated West Plains 6-4, making up for an 8-1 setback the night before.
Connor Scott picked up the win for Charleston as he threw five innings, allowing all four runs (two earned). He struck out 4 and allowed 6 hits. He left the game in the sixth inning with a 5-3 lead and runners at second and third. Steven Dooley came on for the Squirrels to pick up a well-earned save.
He recorded the final six outs. He struck out three.
“We played pretty well this weekend. I was very pleased with our focus Sunday afternoon. We showed what kind of team we can be. I thought we did a lot of good things all weekend. Anytime you go on the road and pick up four victories and a tournament championship you have to be pleased,” said Squirrel Manager Michael Minner.
Tyler Whybark and Blake Gaddis led the Squirrels with two hits apiece. They had five RBI’s between them. “Tyler and Blake had good weekends. They came up in some key spots and got the job done for us. West Plains might be the best team we’ve played all year. We’re real proud of this weekend,” said Minner. With the loss the West Plains Merchants fell to 12-6 on the season.
Charleston knocked off Camdenton Friday night to advance in the winner’s bracket 12-3. Steven Dooley picked up the win as he threw 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight. He allowed all three runs (two earned). Tyler Whybark came on to finish for the Squirrels.
Blake Gaddis led the Squirrels with three hits including a home run. Tyler whybark, James Naile, and Mark Freed all added two hits apiece for Charleston.
Zach Wilson threw the Squirrels into the winner’s bracket championship game Saturday as he tossed a four hitter against the Rolla Red Sox. The Squirrels won the game 11-1.
Wilson threw all seven innings and did not allow an earned run. He struck out four and walked one.
Garrison Eastman paced the offense with two hits including a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Chase McClendon, Tyler Whybark, Marshall Stallings, James Naile, Zach Rowland, Mark Freed, and Mikey Russell all had hits for Charleston.
In game three, Charleston managed only three hits against West Plains as they fell into the loser’s bracket 8-1.
James Naile suffered the loss as he allowed all eight runs (four earned) while giving up ten hits. Mark Freed, Matt Medlock, and Zach Rowland had hits for Charleston.
Mikey Russell earned the Squirrels another shot at West Plains in the championship game as he threw a complete game win over the Rolla Red Sox in an elimination game.
Russell gave up six hits and allowed three earned runs. He struck out five.
Zach Wilson homered for the Squirrels. Bryan Freed, Tyler Whybark, Marshall Stallings, Ethan Browning, Blake Gaddis, James Naile, Zach Rowland, and Mark Freed all had hits for the Squirrels.
Charleston is now 9-8 on the season. They will be back in action tonight as they host Marble Hill in the annual Cancer Game. The Squirrels will be wearing pink jerseys in support of the fight against cancer. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
